Privacy Policy

Short Form: collects your information only with your consent, collects only the minimum amount of information that is necessary to help you use the site, including the culture test or buying the book Cultural Intelligence, does not sell that information to third parties, does not use it for general marketing (e.g. general “affiliate links”) or tracking (e.g. Facebook or Google) and only uses your data as this privacy policy describes. If your culture test scores are ever included in future research (i.e. for culture research) your user name and email address (which are the only personally-identifiable data ever collected) will be removed. Though Across Cultures is a US-based company, this privacy policy is written to offer you a higher standard of protection, in accordance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. These are the basics; full details are below.

Full Form:
This privacy policy discloses the privacy practices for (hereinafter “AC”). This privacy notice applies solely to information collected by this website. This policy notifies you of the following:

  1. What personally identifiable information is collected from you through the website, how it is used, and with whom it may be shared.
  2. What choices are available to you regarding the use of your data.
  3. The security procedures in place to protect the misuse of your information.
  4. Policies on Cookies, Marketing, Affiliations, and Links.
  5. What data are not collected.
  6. Revisions to this policy.
  7. How you can correct any inaccuracies in the information, express concerns, or file a complaint.

1) Information Collection, Use, and Sharing
If you’re just browsing the website, AC uses the same basic technologies most websites use, such as cookies (if you allow them through your browser preferences), and collects the same basic information that most websites collect, such as web server logs, which include the date and time of your visit, which pages you visited, and your browser type. Web server logs also include your IP address, which could identify the location you are browsing from. AC generally purges web logs after 1-2 months.

In order to use the Peterson Cultural Style Indicator™ (hereinafter “PCSI”) portion of this website, you must first complete a registration form, which requires a working email address for verification, a user name, and a password. This basic information is needed to provide the services you request. Your email address is never used to contact you about products, services, or promotions of any sort. At your option, when you complete the PCSI you may also opt to provide general, non-personally identifiable demographic information about yourself (such as gender, birth year, industry, or country of origin) but this is not required (by default, the boxes are blank unless you choose to complete them). No personally-identifiable data beyond your email address and the user name you create are ever collected. If you are part of a group completing the PCSI, the leader of the group (i.e. your instructor) will be able to see your user name, your cultural profile (the score based on how you answered the 25 questions, but not the answers to the questions themselves), and the date and time you completed the PCSI, but the group leader cannot see your demographic information (gender, birth year, etc.). Other users of the PCSI (i.e. your classmates or coworkers, people from other companies or classes) cannot see any of your data or culture test scores whatsoever (just as you cannot see theirs).

During both registration for the PCSI and when purchasing a culture test, you must agree to a License Agreement and to this Privacy Policy. The License Agreement is a separate document that may be found linked on the bottom of every page of the site. The License Agreement is mostly about legal aspects of trademarked and copyrighted material, refund policy, and so on, but regarding privacy it also specifies that data collected by the PCSI may be used by AC only in ways that do not identify specific individuals. Accepting the License Agreement indicates your explicit acceptance of this Privacy Policy.

AC sells the book Cultural Intelligence through this website, which is sold through Amazon and other booksellers, and may use clickable links to do so. Amazon or other parties may collect data about you when you purchase the book using links in the AC website, but no data from the website is collected or expressly sent to Amazon or other booksellers. All book sales through Amazon links in this website are subject to Amazon’s sales terms and policies.

AC is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. AC only collects information that you voluntarily provide via email or other direct contact. AC will not sell or rent any personally identifiable information to anyone.

If you contact AC using the Contact menu link, AC will use your information to respond to you. AC will not share your information with any third party outside of AC, other than as necessary to fulfill your request, (e.g. to complete a transaction, or for technical help).

By default you are opted out of any contact by AC via email regarding specials, new products or services, changes to this privacy policy, and so on. AC’s practice is to refrain from actively marketing anything to site visitors.

AC does not track or target any of its website visitors for marketing or advertising, or any type of personally-identifiable profiling. AC does not provide information allowing other organizations to do so (e.g. through general “affiliate links” or Google Analytics). AC never has used and remains committed to not using, linking to or from, or affiliating itself in any way with any form of social media (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and so on). You may verify that AC does not track or target you by using a free browser add-on such as DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials or NoScript (or similar future technologies) or by viewing the source code in any page.

2) Your Access to and Control Over Information
You can do the following at any time by contacting AC via the Contact menu on the top of every page in the site:

a) See what personal data AC has about you, if any.
b) Request that AC change/correct/delete any personal data AC has about you.
c) Express any concern you have about AC’s use of your data that is not addressed in this privacy policy.

3) Security
While 100% security can never be guaranteed by anyone, AC takes industry standard security precautions and uses encryption to protect your information. When you submit sensitive information via the website, your information is protected both online and offline.

Secure browsing is turned on by default to ensure that any sensitive information is encrypted and transmitted to AC in a secure way (e.g. your PCSI login information). You can verify this by looking for a lock icon in your browser’s address bar and looking for “https” at the beginning of the address of any web page. Secure browsing prevents eavesdropping, content injection, and cookie stealing, which can be used to take over online accounts. The PCSI password you create is encrypted in a database and cannot be read by AC.

AC also protects your information offline. The computers/servers in which AC stores personally identifiable information are are located in the United States in a secure environment with a web host that maintains industry standard security precautions. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, involving web hosting or a technical issue) are granted access to personally identifiable information (such as the database that contains your email address).

4) Cookies, Marketing, Affiliations, and Links
AC uses “cookies” on this site. A cookie is information stored on your computer or device to help improve your access to AC’s site and identify repeat visitors. For instance, when you log in to the PCSI and AC uses a cookie to identify you, you would not have to log in more than once, thereby saving time. If you wish, you can disallow use of cookies in your browser’s preferences. Cookies are not used for marketing or for any affiliation program with any third parties. Usage of a cookie is not linked to any personally identifiable information on AC except to identify you as you pay for the PCSI.

Payments made for the PCSI are processed through PayPal, a separate company not affiliated with AC. Cookies are used to complete a PayPal sale, then return you to AC, logged in and ready to use the test you just purchased. PayPal almost certainly collects standard information such as your IP address in their web logs, and because PayPal is not an anonymous payment service, PayPal necessarily collects other information that identifies you during payment. Please see for their own specific Privacy Policy and data collection and security practices.

This website contains no links to other sites except as a courtesy to website visitors (such as a link to a publisher on the Contact page, after a number of site visitors had requested this information). AC is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of such other sites.

5) What Data are Not Collected
AC does not collect sensitive personal information such as health records, street addresses or phone numbers, government-issued identification numbers, genetic data, data that could harm your reputation, or any information related to youth or children. AC does not collect or have access to any payment or financial account information (such as your bank or credit card information) since payment transactions are handled through PayPal.

6) Revisions to this Policy
Although most changes are likely to be minor, this policy may be revised periodically. This privacy policy was last modified July 2018. It was updated to notify site visitors that the book Cultural Intelligence: A Guide to Working with People from Other Cultures (Second Edition – 2018) will be sold through this website using Amazon or other links.

For general site visitors, there is a link to the AC privacy policy on the bottom of all pages in the website and you are encouraged to revisit this page to stay aware of any changes as AC will not post separate notices or require further click-to-agree actions for general site visitors. People newly registering for the PCSI or buying tests will need to click to agree to the current version of this policy, with a clear link to this full policy provided at the time of registration and purchase. For all site users (whether general site visitors or PCSI users) your continued use of the AC site constitutes your agreement to the terms of this privacy policy and any future revisions.

7) Corrections, Concerns, or Complaints
If you feel that AC is not abiding by this privacy policy, know of any inaccuracies to be corrected, or have any other concerns to voice, you may contact AC via the Contact link in the menu on the top of any page of the site. Please communicate with AC immediately so your concern can be resolved.

AC is a US-based company subject to the jurisdiction of the US Federal Trade Commission and the Bureau of Consumer Protection, where you may file a complaint if you have one.
